about

Binnie had this image in mind, that life wasn’t the “road” of literature and song – it was an “alley” – something with only a certain width; every day we re-make the width and what we will do inside of it. Life is like playing with shapes. She invites the listener to come investigate the future. This song was written after the worst of the pandemic was over. And once again, we know we have to “build a better place.”

lyrics

SHAPES OF THE THINGS TO COME
Lyrics by Binnie Klein, Music by Tartie

Life’s not a road, it’s an alley
We try --- to fit inside
We try –-to fit inside
Every day we set the ground
Stretched end to end
But we can bend

Move with me
Through the new shapes
Of the things to come
Move with me
Through the new shapes
Of the things to come
We’ll tell our sweet stories
We’ll build a better place
Why won’t you move with me
Through the new shapes
Of the things to come
The things to come

I make everything long … longer (Ah… oh…)
We’ll build everything strong … stronger (Ah...oh...)
I make everything long
Because longing is my way

This is not a sad tale
It’s a clear signal
To a thousand ships
Sailing on determined oceans
A thousand kisses
For a thousand lips

Why won’t you just move with me
Through the new shapes
Of the things to come
Why won’t you just move with me
Through the new shapes
Of the things to come
We’ll tell our sweet story
We’ll build a better place
Why won’t you just move with me
Through the new shapes
Of the things to come
The things to come……
(Ah, oh)
(ah, oh oh )
