about

During a zoom session working on music, Tartie mentioned to Binnie that Australian musicians were writing songs about the horrific wildfires destroying peoples’ homes and land. Local radio stations were playing the songs. She’d written one, and Binnie asked to hear it. She had no particular plans for the song. Binnie was astonished by its power, and encouraged Tartie to make a proper demo. She reached out to Yale Climate Connections and they picked up the story and promoted the unreleased song. Binnie and Tartie were interviewed about the disaster and the songwriting process. When it came time in 2022 to produce Ablaze for the album, Binnie wanted to emphasize the way the earth was crying out and thought of an indigenous group, Ulali. Producer David Baron knew that Jen Kresiberg of Ulali was in CT, and she was recorded at a studio where Binnie and Jen could meet. Jen was very moved by Tartie’s voice. She also sang background vocals for “Hailstorm.” Ablaze is becoming more relevant by the minute, with recent wildfires burning in Canada causing destruction and pollution.

lyrics

How much is she worth?
You went and put a number on her
How much does she deserve?
You went and put a number and now there’s
smoke already In our lungs
And the season’s just begun
There is smoke already in our lungs
It’s just begun…..

Why do we wait?
Til it’s too late
Oh can’t you say
That it’s a lie today
She’s in pain
And you went away
Letting it lay
Meanwhile
We are all ablaze
We are all ablaze

How much is she worth?
You went and put a number on her
How much does she deserve?
You went and put a number on her

Why do we wait?
Til it’s too late
Oh can’t you say
That it’s a lie today
She’s in pain
And you went away
Letting it lay
Meanwhile we are
All ablaze
We are all ablaze
