about

These lyrics were inspired by an experience of someone from the deep past re-emerging in the writer’s life; stirring up intense emotion of love, betrayal, innocence, and loss. The writer wants the hurt to heal, and the careless young boy stands in for the careless treatment of the earth and the forest, and so links to the perils of climate change and deforestation

ORCHARD
Lyrics by Binnie Klein, Music by Tartie

Let all the fruits fall down!

Moving through the orchard
You strode through the grove
Arms grabbed apples of the sun
Trunks were strong—you thought “love”

Came back next spring
Stripped the branches clean
Earth there for you to devour or protect
You come off gentle, wind up mean

Following along behind you
I forgot to wear my hat
I didn’t bring my gloves
Jagged edges laid the trap

Won’t you leave this orchard
Won’t you leave this town
Let me grow tangled, let me dry
Let all the fruits fall down

Where’s your heart at, man
What’s going on with you?
Why are you stuck at seventeen
In that casual, casting-off way?

Moving through the orchard
You did your work so fast
Supplies for others dwindled
But your memory would last

Won’t you leave this orchard
Won’t you leave this town
Let me grow tangled, let me dry
Let all the fruits fall down
